The heat is on in New York City, but that didn't stop thousands of yoga enthusiasts from gathering in Times Square on
Wednesday (June 20) for a massive yoga class.
Organizers said 14,000 people registered for the yoga event, called "Mind Over Madness," which marks the the summer solstice and the longest day of the year.
Co-founder of Solstice in Times Square, Douglass Stewart, said Times Square is the ideal location to challenge individuals to still their thoughts.
"It's an intersection of all places, you know. It's like a major intersection of a... lots of people are here and broadway shows are here. Different kinds of people with different agendas, all meeting at this place and the busiest place. And so we decided and thought that this would be the perfect place to test that theory", said Douglass Stewart, Co-Founder of .
Temperatures hit over 90 degrees Fahrenheit (32 Celsius), but event participants seemed to enjoy the experience anyway.
"It's pretty intense. I just thought about the energy of Times Square, and what it is like in New Year's Eve, and I thought it couldn't be a better place to practice yoga in the same spot," said Anthony David Stamp, yoga practitioner from Boston.
"It was just really exhilarating and exciting and really hot", said Joy Harvey from Brooklyn, who also participated last year's event.
This is the tenth year that yoga practitioners have laid down their mats in Times Square and settled into a renewed New York state of mind.
